Employees at Plasticard-Locktech International collected $1,772 for Elben-Kimmel Charities through the end of December. The funds were used to purchase Christmas gifts for four families receiving assistance through Eblen-Kimmel’s Saint Nicholas Project. Read more...

Job seekers flock to fair at the Biltmore Square Mall

The 4th Annual Homecoming Job Fair was held on Tuesday, December 29, 2009 at the Biltmore Square Mall in Asheville. 70 local companies participated in the job fair, representing 2,100 jobs to be filled in the first quarter of 2010.  Over 2,000 job seekers attended the fair in search of employment.  Read more...

EDC Announces 2009 Homecoming Job Fair Employers

ThermoFisher Scientific Announces Expansion and 104 New Positions

Thermo Fisher Scientific released plans today to create 104 jobs and invest $5 million during the next three years at its plant in Asheville. Located in Buncombe County for over 25 years, Thermo Fisher Scientific currently employs approximately 540 persons at three local facilities, including a manufacturing plant, warehouse and technical customer service center.  Read more...

Volvo Announces Closure of Asheville Manufacturing Facility

Earlier today Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE) announced the consolidation of its North American industrial operations. As a result of this restructuring the Asheville, NC manufacturing facility will shut its doors by March 31, 2010.  Read more...

North Carolina Named Nation's "Top Business Climate" for 5th Consecutive Year

Site Selection magazine’s annual “Top Business Climate” rankings are based on quantitative and qualitative factors that corporate site-seekers – those who help companies expand or relocate – say they consider most important.  It is the fifth year in a row and the eighth time in nine years that NC has taken the top honor in the annual ranking by Site Selection, one of the nation’s premier magazines for economic development.

Schools examine role in educating for industry jobs

Interest in technical and industrial courses remains strong at area high schools: Last school year 800 students took such courses in Asheville City Schools. Educators, however, are having a harder time getting students to take what they have learned in the courses and turn it into a career after high school.

Despite tough year, manufacturing will play vital role in WNC's future

The $3,921 average monthly wage in local manufacturing was the third-highest among 19 major sectors in the economy, according to figures from Tveidt. Its payroll in the Asheville metro made up 21.5 percent of all wages paid in the four-county area in the first quarter of this year, according to state figures. Read more...

Federal funds approved for state veterans home in Black Mountain

Gov. Bev Perdue today announced that the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (USDVA) has conditionally approved the state's application for federal assistance to build a 100-bed State Veterans Home in Black Mountain. Conditions for the $14.6 million award include finalizing design documents, approval by involved state agencies, and advertising and award of construction bids.  Read more...

The centerpiece of the week will be “Educator in Industry Day” on Tuesday, October 13, introducing 100 area educators from City of Asheville, Buncombe and Madison County Schools to the diversity of educational and career opportunities unique to advanced manufacturing.  Employers including Deltec Homes, Jacob Holm Industries, Thermo Fisher Scientific and Unison Engine Components will participate in panel discussions of workforce needs and provide plant tours for teachers throughout the day.

A Buncombe County Board meets Wednesday to recommend how to allocate $14.6 million in federal economic stimulus funding. Companies that plan to create jobs in the county are eligible for the money, which comes in the form of low-interest loans and can be used for land, buildings or other capital needs.

Asheville Celebrates New Climate Institute

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration recently announced plans for a new national research institute at the National Climatic Data Center, which underscores Asheville’s growing importance as a center for reliable climate change information. Jane Lubchenco, the undersecretary of commerce for oceans and atmosphere and the ninth administrator for NOAA, will be attending the program.  read more...
